Originally initiated in 1982 as the “Cypress Creek Parks Project” by then County Judge Jon Lindsay, Harris County purchased much of the existing land along Spring Creek. After Commissioner Jerry Eversole realized only a few tracts of land along the floodplain were needed to connect the creek side property from John Pundt Park to Highway 59, he sought out partners, such as Commissioner Ed Chance, Montgomery County, Pct. 3, to accomplish this worthwhile goal that will benefit generations to come. It was also at this time that the project scope was widened to the current plan and renamed the “Spring Creek Greenway Project.”

A grant of $2 million was received from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for developing a linear greenway along Spring Creek, the boundary between the two counties. The primary activities proposed in this application included greenway linkages and habitat conservation through the acquisition of several key properties which connect five existing Harris County parks and the Montgomery County Preserve along Spring Creek and passive and active recreational development in the forms of a multi-use land and water-paddle trail, canoe launch, and picnic grounds. The greenway linkage includes acquisition and development in both counties, preserving the greenway along this important riparian corridor.
